Privacy promise
Highlight is a learning app for kids, so we hold ourselves to a simple rule: collect the least we can, never profit from data, and keep grown-ups in charge.
What we collect
- Learner basics: a first name (or nickname โ any name works) and a grade level, so lessons fit the learner. We never ask a child for a last name, birthday, address, photo, or contact details.
- Learning progress: completed lessons, streaks, XP, saved projects, and answers inside lessons, so progress is real and parents can see it.
- A parent email (optional): only if a grown-up creates a sign-in to save progress across devices. The account belongs to the parent or guardian, not the child.
What we never do
- No ads, ever, anywhere in the app.
- No selling or sharing data with data brokers or advertisers.
- No third-party trackers or analytics companies โ usage counts are measured by our own server, tied to a learner profile id, not to a person's identity.
- No contacting children. The only email we send goes to the parent who signed up: sign-in links and streak reminders for their own learner.
- No public profiles. Learners are never visible to other users.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
Highlight is designed for children, so we follow the spirit and requirements of COPPA (the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act). Accounts are created and controlled by a parent or guardian; creating the sign-in with your own email is how consent is given. A child using the app supplies at most a first name and grade. Without a parent account, everything stays on the device in the browser's local storage and never reaches our servers as identifiable data.
Where data lives
Progress lives in your browser's local storage. If a parent creates a sign-in, a copy is stored in our database (Cloudflare D1, hosted on Cloudflare's network) so it can follow the learner across devices. Magic-link tokens are stored hashed.
Deleting data
Use "Reset setup" in Settings to delete everything on a device. To delete a synced account and every server-side record with it, email me@evangower.com from the parent email on the account and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date above changes and the landing page will say so. We will never weaken the "no ads, no selling data, no contacting kids" promises.
